THE RADIOS AROUND THE WORLD THAT REBROADCAST VATICAN RADIO'S PROGRAMMES

The quality of the radio signal that reaches listeners is of vital importance for any radio that broadcasts beyond its national frontiers. Up until a few decades ago, short wave was the only means technology could offer to cover great distances, while medium wave covered shorter distances. Both medium and especially short wave are subject to interference and are therefore not able to reach all the corners of the earth.

With the arrival of new telecommunication vectors (satellites, fast Internet) Vatican Radio has been given the chance to further amplify the range of its activity not only to reach those listeners who utilize these new technologies, but above all to set up a collaboration with those stations wishing to relay Vatican Radio’s signal on their own frequencies, primarily on Frequency Modulation. These stations pick up Vatican Radio’s signal from the two Intelsat Satellites positioned over the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, from the European satellite Eutelsat or from Internet. Thus a fruitful relationship with 1,040 radios in 70 nations has been established. Among these, Catholic radio stations are the most numerous, but there are also commercial stations and even some public state radios (in Argentina, Paraguay, Perù, Poland, Slovakia and Venezuela).

Latin America is the continent with the largest number of radios rebroadcasting Vatican Radio in the Spanish language (363), either singly, or through the EWTN and Paxnet networks. Of these stations 60 are in Argentina, 47 in Perù, 37 in Ecuador, 35 in Bolivia and 34 in Chile. Furthermore, the Portuguese programmes for Brazil are rebroadcast by 353 radios, that are linked together in five networks: Fundacão João Paulo II – Cancão Nova, Rede Fraternidade – Porto Alegre – Rio Grande do Sul, Fundacão Fraternidade, Milicia da Imaculada – São Paolo e Rede Católica.
Europe follows Latin America with 291 radio stations that rebroadcast Vatican Radio: 177 in Italy, the majority of which link up to the Blu Sat satellite of the Episcopal Conference, 58 in France united in two networks: Radio Chrétiennes en France and COFRAC, and 20 in Poland. The Polish programme is also rebroadcast in the United States, in New York and Chicago.
In North America there are 15 stations in the United States that rebroadcast our programmes, in both English and Spanish, and four in Canada.

In Africa where as we know there are enormous economic problems, Vatican Radio is rebroadcast by 27 radios in 20 countries. The majority of these are located in the Democratic Republic of Congo (4).

In Asia and Oceania we find fewer radios interested in rebroadcasting Vatican Radio programmes. In Asia Catholics are a minority, except in the Philippines. Moreover the regulations in force in some countries do not allow private radio stations to be set up. And so in Asia only four radios rebroadcast Vatican Radio: two in the Philippines (Radio Veritas and Radio DWAM), a radio in Japan (BS Communications Corporation of Tokyo, in English) and the “Voix de la Charité” Radio in Lebanon.

In Oceania there is a radio in Australia (Dziadzan Radio) and one in Papau New Guinea (Catholic Radio Network).
The programmes most popularly rebroadcast are those giving information on the life of the Church and on current international events. It must however be underlined that the increase in the rebroadcasting of Vatican Radio programmes not only improves the quality of the signal, and therefore an increase in listenership, but also achieves an intra-ecclesial collaboration that unites the universal Church and the particular churches in the common mission, incarnated in different cultural contexts, of preaching the Gospel to the world through radio waves that know no boundaries.
